![]() Also don't cheap out on your PSU.Īlso, poor/broken compatibility of plugins with M1 Mac is a thing, I think the composer video above mentions this.Īre these new M1 chips really that insanely good? And does 16GB of memory cover all the bases or is 32 the way to go? I think Ryzen is more sensitive to RAM speed than Intel, so if you go the Ryzen route, pick the optimal speed (it might be 3600Mhz, not too sure).Īlso consider budgeting in a power conditioner and power back up in case of dirty power and power cuts. There's also the issue of DDR4 to DDR5, and you'd be paying a premium for the latter. Current 12th gen motherboards are still a bit pricey but they are dropping. Scan Pro Audio did a nice video comparing Ryzen to 12th gen and 11th gen. EDIT: I found the Nvidia post įor CPU, you might wanna consider some of the Intel 12th gen. RME are probably number 1 in this regard. With PC you're also kinda beholden to your audio interface's driver, and not all drivers are built the same. I assume Mac doesn't have this issue, but then again, they aren't great for gaming. I'm a mostly hobbyist so it doesn't really affect my day to day that much but I imagine with mission-critical projects you'd rather go with integrated graphics or AMD GPU. ![]() Apparently according to some guy in /r/audioengineering who builds music computers for a living (I wish I could remember which user it was) they cause DPC latency issues and checking with LatencyMon on my computer, yes it does. One consideration with PCs are Nvidia video cards. If you want high end gaming capability or video editing capability the desktop computer is the way to go.Ĭomposer Anne-Kathrin Dern made a nice video on Mac vs PC Her use case is professional media composition which is one of the more demanding use cases for a powerhouse computer. Had a hardware failure last Christmas so had to do a few re-installs. Also I made an excel list of all that I require be installed to better be able to recover from an issue. I pushed all of my stuff onto one laptop and moved stuff I don't use to external backup drives. My opinion is that if you can centralize it all, do it. You get good with what you choose and commit to.ģ) this depends on how much you are willing to invest moving stuff from a to b, and how much you are willing to spend time on managing 2 systems.įinally, I've had windows at home, Mac at the studio and a MacBook for gigs. It is not a specced out pc tho, and shouldn't even be considered in the same ballpark performance wise.Ģ) I don't know how to answer this. But m1 still runs on a smaller laptop with smaller power draw and is competitive. Ryzen 9 will blow it out of the water on raw desktop performance though. is it really worth it to own two computers to do what one could?ġ) yes. How would you think about cost here? For exactly the same price as MBP M1 Pro with 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage, I can build a 5900x-based build with a nice GPU for gaming (already bought one just in case), 32GB of RAM, and 2 TB SSD plus a maxed out M1 MacBook Air for live performance.Does anyone here come to the PC vs Mac discussion with a similar laser focus on performance/usability and what feels like a better production experience for you?.Are these new M1 chips really that insanely good? And does 16GB of memory cover all the bases or is 32 the way to go?.Not having to pay an exorbitant amount to future proof and upgrading parts if/when I need to sounds wonderful. I like macOS a lot and my whole flow is really tuned to it, but I’m very partial to the raw power and upgradeability available with a PC. The Neural DSP amp sims really do a number on the CPU, especially when I’m recording audio while everything is running. Per my case, I pay the bills as a professional podcast engineer hooked on Logic and Izotope RX (doing occasional video work), but I’m also a longtime Ableton user with an increasingly nasty habit of battering my 2015 MBP with lots of simultaneous costly plugins. ![]() I mean, on face you can just build such an insanely powerful machine for a lot less than what Apple wants to charge for the equivalent amount, but I’m reading wild stuff about what people are doing on the M1 MacBook Airs of all things… Gave up on Windows over a decade ago and never looked back… until right now. Right now I’m absolutely torn between building a Ryzen 5900x-based desktop and going with a MBP M1 Pro build. Hi WATM, long time lurker, figured this is the right place to ask my burning questions about getting a new music production computer.
